What is Convoke.Games
Convoke.Games is a modern, webcam-based Magic: The Gathering gaming platform. Created near the end of 2025, Convoke has quickly grown into a major online play experience alternative to the Wizards of the Coast owned, SpellTable. Though both have success, Convoke is quickly developing a strong foundation in the Online Webcam Play Space. Adding much more robust features, with an improved AI model card-recognition system, and a more premium user interface (UI), it should come as no surprise that Convoke Games has really found their niche for the online Magic the Gathering player base.
The Brief History of Webcam Based Magic the Gathering
The Beginning: SpellTable
Laying the foundation, SpellTable was created in 2020 and quickly joined Wizards of the Coast in the same year. Developed to provide players a web option to play more Magic the Gathering, while the Covid pandemic scares were still occurring around America and the rest of the world. In the early days, SpellTable was genuinely innovative. It let players use webcams to play paper Magic remotely, helped solve the problem of card readability, and used peer-to-peer video to keep costs down. An early engineering post explained that the peer-to-peer model had real tradeoffs: each player’s upload and CPU load mattered more, and the team noted that they could not support too many players or a spectator mode” with that architecture at the time.
Before we talk about why we are excited for Convoke, we want to give SpellTable its flowers. SpellTable helped make webcam Magic a normal part of the community during a crazy time in our history. It gave players a way to keep playing paper Magic remotely, helped local communities stay connected, and became the default online table for a lot of Commander players. For many of us, SpellTable was the first time webcam Magic felt truly possible.
The Current — and Future — of Webcam Magic
But webcam Magic has changed. Commander tables are more complex, cEDH games move faster, and players expect to follow the action without needing to pause every few seconds to ask, “What card is that?” That is where Convoke feels different. It does not just recreate the old webcam table; it reimagines what the online table can be with an advanced take on their own AI model card-recognition system.
Convoke brings a more modern layer to online paper Magic: stronger AI card recognition, decklist tools, friend and community features, positive-play tools, digital card support, rulings access, and creator-focused features that make games easier to play and easier to watch. For content creator groups like The Clever Impersonators, that matters. Our webcam games are not just about getting four players into a lobby. They are about helping people follow complicated board states, learn decision points, understand the stack sequencing, and enjoy the game with fewer barriers.
The Key Differences
Both platforms let you play paper Magic: The Gathering online with friends. Here is a transparent look at how they compare so you can pick the right fit for you and your playgroup.
Reasons why our Playgroup prefers Convoke
- Video Resolution; HD 1080p vs 720p.
- Card Recognition; Accuracy and speed.
- Social Aspect; Customizable user-profiles, spectator mode, friends list and more.
- Enhanced UI/UX; Modern-design, intuitive, integrated.
Designed by people who actually play Magic
Convoke feels different because it is being built by developers who love the game and understand what online paper Magic needs: smoother gameplay, better card recognition, easier setup, and tools that help the table feel more natural.
Made for gameplay people can follow
For content creators, clarity matters. Convoke’s focus on card recognition, spectator-friendly play, deck visibility, and stream-ready tools helps make webcam games easier to watch, easier to teach, and easier to enjoy.
More than a webcam lobby
With friends lists, public tables, creator discovery, communities, and positive-play tools, Convoke is building toward something bigger than just four cameras in a room. It is creating a more connected way to gather online.
Honestly, our group had talked about trying out Convoke while making SpellTable content on our YouTube channel and once we finally did try Convoke, we were blown away about the enhanced experience that Convoke provided. We had wished we had used Convoke much sooner!
Why We Partnered with Convoke as Ambassadors
The Passion Project Turned Reality
Convoke is made by developers who love Magic. We wanted an easier, friendlier way to play with friends online. Convoke is designed for new and competitive players alike. You can see their Story here.
Not Your Ordinary Webcam Experience
What really excited us about Convoke.Games is that it feels like it is being designed for the future of community-driven Magic content. It is not just a webcam platform where four players are podded together online; it is a space being built along content creators, local playgroups, spectatorship, and the social experience of playing Magic the Gathering together. Regardless of the bracket levels, Convoke has developed modern tools that support creator discovery, community connection, spectator-friendly play, and smoother online interactions. Convoke helps make webcam Magic feel less isolated and more connected just like how Magic was designed for "the Gathering." For The Clever Impersonators, that is exactly the kind of platform we want to support. Our mission has always been to entertain, educate, and grow the Magic the Gathering and cEDH community, and Convoke gives us a better way to bring players into that experience whether they are sitting across the table, watching from home, or joining us for a game online.
